Equality, Diversity & Inclusion

Equality, Diversity and Inclusion (EDI) is a shared value for everyone in the Centre

We are committed to fostering a diverse and inclusive environment for students to engage in digital materials science research. Through developing a community built on equality and access to opportunity, we want every student to realise their potential regardless of their circumstances.

Our values

We are proud to celebrate the diversity that already exists in the CDT; within our science, across our academic supervisors and industry partners, and within our student cohorts. But we also recognise that we can and must do more to work on this in future. We are committed to fostering an inclusive work environment and empowering everyone to realise their potential by providing opportunities to all.

Our commitment to Equality, Diversity and Inclusion (EDI) includes:

  • Empowering all individuals to express their opinions freely
  • Ensuring our recruitment process is as inclusive as it can be
  • Aiming for equity in opportunities for all to develop and progress
  • Embedding EDI values in all our projects, our processes, and our engagements externally

Our Initiatives to Improve EDI

We are taking the following steps to improve EDI in the Centre by:

  • Including EDI as a fixed topic in the agenda of our management and  meetings
  • Working with our partner institutions recruitment teams to ensure our project adverts are inclusive and advertised to a diverse audience
  • Celebrating student and staff success across the Centre
  • Ensuring our students are engaging with, and benefitting from, our training programme and other courses at their host institutions
  • Surveying our students to obtain anonymous feedback and highlight EDI topic areas where we need improvement in our provision
  • Planning our training programme and events to be as open and accessible as possible
  • Ensuring our residential training weeks have a diverse and representative faculty of trainers and speakers
  • Creating opportunities for open community discussions on issues facing the digital materials sector

Through these actions we aspire to:

  • Provide an environment where everyone can be their authentic selves
  • Increase recruitment and retention of minority and under-represented students in digital materials science
  • Become a beacon of good practice in the digital materials sector
