Welcome to the EPSRC Centre for Doctoral Training in Materials 4.0
You will join a cohort of like-minded PhD researchers as part of the Centre for Doctoral Training in Developing National Capability for Materials 4.0 with the Henry Royce Institute, the UK’s national institute for advanced materials research. You will have a home in one of seven leading UK research universities where you will undertake a research project supervised by a leading researcher and sponsored by industry. You will be trained in all aspects of digital materials science and become a pioneer in this exciting new way of doing science.

What is Materials 4.0?
Materials 4.0 is the digital revolution that will accelerate the discovery, innovation, and validation of new materials systems. It aims to maximise the value of materials data and link the digital with the physical via cyber-physical systems for prediction, classification, and control of material performance.

First Materials 4.0 CDT Summer Conference
The 1st of July saw the Alan Turing building at the University of Manchester play host to the inaugural Materials 4.0 Summer Conference. The event involved an exciting half-day bringing together our first cohort of PGRs students, their supervisors, CDT co-investigators, industrial sponsors and invited speakers.

CDT student joins Hydrogen Material Challenges training course
Last month Orán Magan, one of the cohort 1 PGRs in the Materials 4.0 CDT, attended the Hydrogen Material Challenges training course at Cranfield University. We caught up with Orán to learn more.

Ending our first year of training
The final residential training week of year 1 ran 10-14 March. Cohort 1 PGRs enjoyed a week of thought-provoking training led by Centre staff, academics, and industry collaborators.
