Diving into Machine Learning’s Role in Materials Science

Published on behalf of cohort 2

Our recent CDT  training week in London showcased the exciting future of materials research. From exploring Henry Royce’s thin-film facilities at Imperial’s White City Campus to experiencing machine learning’s strengths and weaknesses first-hand, the residential week gave us plenty to reflect on. Highlights included tours of cutting-edge nanofabrication laboratories, building digital twins from scratch, and questioning what it means to conduct statistically rigorous research.

We celebrated history at Bushy House, marking 125 years since its handover to the National Physical Laboratory, and reflected on the vital role of metrology in modern science and our daily lives. Furthermore, a thought-provoking EDI session emphasized the importance of representation and inclusion in research, leading to many follow-up discussions.

Beyond the labs, we immersed ourselves in London’s vibrant atmosphere – visiting the Science Museum, sharing meals, and strengthening our community through team activities such as educational LEGO challenges. Networking with industry partners and connecting with like-minded peers reinforced the collaborative spirit that defines our CDT – a spirit we carry back to our home institutions.
