Mathilde L. D. Franckel earned a French engineering degree from ECPM in Strasbourg, with a specialisation in material science and condensed matter physics. Her thesis at EPFL focused on optical transitions related to defects in metal oxides. She subsequently completed a master's degree in Materials Science at the University of California, Santa Barbara, where she applied first-principles calculations to investigate proton migration in indium oxide.
Mathilde is a member of Cohort 2 of the Materials 4.0 Centre for Doctoral Training and is employed at Imperial College London in the research group led by Professor Aron Walsh. Her research focuses on defects in crystalline materials, with particular emphasis on catalysis. Currently, she investigates the capability of machine-learning interatomic potentials to capture long-range electrostatic interactions between charged defects. She also contributes to LeMaterial, an open-source project managed by Entalpic and Hugging Face that develops datasets and tools to accelerate materials research and discovery.
